Yoga can be your ally when suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis).
In spite of the name, CFS symptoms are not limited to extreme fatigue; patients often suffer from chronic pain and neurological symptoms. It is an illness that affects all systems in the body.
Yoga has been proven time and time again to reduce chronic pain, improve mental health, increase strength and flexibility and aid sleep. However, people with chronic conditions might be intimidated by the practice. Too often when we refer to yoga we tend to think of people standing on their head or performing contortionist postures. This is not what yoga is.
We can practice yoga in many different ways and adapt it to what our body needs on a certain day. We need to approach yoga as a mindful practice, rather than a workout.
It is important to know who you are practicing with, their knowledge and qualifications. Not all styles will benefit CFS. I personally find Gentle Hatha, Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga to be the most beneficial. In addition, you can try to practice mindfullness and meditation on its own, as well as Yoga Nidra.
